Johnston Community School District recently issued the following announcement.

The Johnston High School Wind Symphony, the top ensemble out of three at the high school, has been selected to participate as a clinic band at the 2022 Iowa Bandmasters Convention.

The 54-member group of 10th– through 12th-grade musicians will perform 1 p.m. Thursday, May 12 at the Des Moines Marriott Downtown, 700 Grand Ave. This is the third time in recent years that Johnston will perform at the Iowa Bandmasters Convention. The band also participated in convention as a clinic band in 2011 and 2019.

This year, the JHS Wind Symphony was selected to be part of the Young Conductor’s Workshop, which allows young and upcoming teachers to learn and practice rehearsal techniques with a live ensemble. This year’s clinician for the workshop is Dr. Paula Crider, professor emerita at the University of Texas.

The symphony, directed by Jason Heeren, has a strong history of excellence. Earlier this year, the group was selected to perform at the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) Convention.

Students in the group have earned many consecutive superior ratings at the Iowa High School Music Association State Large Group Festival and many Division 1 ratings at the Adventureland Band Festival earning the Best in Class award in 2017.
