The Johnston Police Department was proud to promote one member to a supervisory position on Monday, May 2, 2022. Mayor Paula Dierenfeld swore in Sergeant Slack.

“Sergeant Slack’s effort to grow and improve, coupled with his commitment to professionalism and public service, has earned him the opportunity for this promotion,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel.

Sergeant Slack has been an Iowa-certified police officer since 2013. In August of 2015, he transitioned from patrol work to the Johnston Community Schools and served as a School Resource Officer for six years. In this position, Sergeant Slack built positive relationships with students.

In April 2021, he was assigned to the Investigations Unit as a Detective, where he has spent the last year conducting criminal investigations. He has transitioned back to patrol, where he will work with a team of outstanding officers on the day shift.

In addition to Sergeant Slack’s previous special assignments, he is a certified Taser Instructor, ALICE Instructor, Springfield Firearms Armorer, and serves as a member of the Johnston Police Department’s Quick Response Team (QRT).
