Today the Johnston Community School District opened its doors to legislators, city council members and other policymakers for a Legislative Showcase.

Our guests came to Johnston High School where they spoke with students, took a tour of the school building, peeked in classrooms including culinary, welding and the wood shop; and learned about a variety of programs and opportunities available to Johnston students.

Programs featured include Johnston’s leadership role and participation in the state’s teacher apprenticeship program, the new EMT (emergency medical technician) course, Project Lead the Way, iJAG (Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates), Pro Start, School to Work, DMACC online courses and more.

Jyll Johnson Miner, the district’s career technical education/related arts and postsecondary education learning coordinator, emphasized the importance of partnerships with the community and other school districts.

One group arrived in the morning, while another came in the afternoon. The  event was held in advance of the 2023 legislative session.

While the showcase was held at Johnston High School, Superintendent Laura Kacer emphasized both to staff and to those who attended that every part of our district — from preschool to high school — plays a role in our success.
