Iowans in need of legal assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic can get help for free.

The Iowa Legal Aid in conjunction with the Iowa State Bar Association and Polk County Bar Association's Volunteer Lawyers Project are giving Iowans one less thing to worry about as the pandemic impacts employment and housing in communities statewide.

To qualify for assistance, the legal issues must be related to the pandemic.

This includes those who are in danger of being evicted from their home, incidents of identity theft, a denial of unemployment benefits or any employment issues linked to COVID-19, according to the Sioux City Journal.

States across the country report seeing a spike in domestic violence as many states have enacted stay-at-home orders.

People dealing with legal issues pertaining to domestic violence are also encouraged to call the legal advice hotline.

When calling the COVID-19 Legal Advice Hotline, callers will not speak to a live person, according to the Sioux City Journal. Callers will be instructed to leave a message and a member of the Iowa Legal Aid team will call them back.

The COVID-19 Legal Advice Hotline number is 1-800-332-0419. Call between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
