Although Iowa is in the gradual process of reopening, citizens should still exercise caution as they patronize businesses, leaders from the Polk County Board of Supervisors, the City of Des Moines and the Court Avenue District advised.

The officials stressed that the COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing.

Tom Zmolek, president of the Historic Court Avenue District Association, bluntly warned that bars and restaurants receiving the all-clear to welcome back customers does not translate into business as usual.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie said the establishment must adhere to the 50% capacity rule or face consequences such as suspension or revocation of their liquor licenses.

“The coronavirus doesn’t follow a calendar, and normal isn’t going to happen overnight or in a week,” Cownie told the Des Moines Register.

Polk County Supervisor Matt McCoy strongly urged Iowans to prioritize the health of others.
