Polk County Supervisors are looking for Gov. Kim Reynolds to issue them the authority to enforce a mask order, KCCI reported.
While Reynolds recently rolled out the “Step Up, Mask Up” initiative to urge Iowa residents to wear masks, she has yet to issue a mandate or give local entities the power to do so.
Polk County Supervisor Angela Connolly said a mandate could be the only option they have.
“We don’t have a vaccine, and this is really our vaccine,” Connolly told KCCI.
She said she would have no problem backing a mask mandate if Reynolds decided to enforce one even for 30 days or two weeks to 30 days, she told KCCI.
“We know that the number is going to continue to rise, this is our only defense," Connolly said.
Her plea comes as Polk County is leading the state with COVID-19 cases after more than 9,000 people have contracted the virus.
