City of Johnston issued the following announcement on Sept. 22.

The Johnston Police Department, along with numerous other Iowa law enforcement agencies, will participate in a Central Iowa Traffic Safety Task Force (CITSTF) on Friday, Sept. 25, 2020, in NW Polk County.

Officers will be focusing on impaired and distracted driving, along with speed between 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. “The number of deaths involving vehicle accidents is on the rise this year,” said Sergeant J.J. Johnson. “Law enforcement across the state has also seen a significant increase in the number of speeders. We encourage motorists to drive the speed limit and don’t drive distracted.”

Each year, too many lives are lost on Iowa roadways due to excessive speed, failure to buckle up, distracted driving and driving under the influence. To date, Iowa has had 232 fatalities; of those, 42.47 percent were not wearing a seat belt (Iowa DOT). We remind motorists not to speed, wear their seat belt, don’t drink and drive and follow all laws.
