Solicitor's permit in Johnston

Johnston

City of Johnston issued the following announcement on July 30.

The City of Johnston requires a permit for any person who represents themselves, any business, organization, or group soliciting or attempting to solicit from residences, or upon the public right-of-way or street, monies, contributions, or orders for goods, subscriptions, services or merchandise to be delivered immediately or at a future date.

Solicitors are required to display their permits. Hours for soliciting in the city are 9:00 a.m.- 7:00 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 1:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. on Sunday. For a list of active solicitor permits, click here.

When issuing a Solicitor Permit, the City is verifying only that the applicant is who he claims to be, has not been convicted of a felony or any offense involving theft or fraud, or sexual abuse, and/or a crime requiring sex offender registration, or any crime involving force or violence, moral turpitude, or any violation of any law relating to the act of soliciting.

The city DOES NOT validate or endorse any of the products or services being offered. We encourage residents to use discretion when dealing with any solicitor and make sure they are confident in an organization before deciding to make a donation or purchase from someone you are not directly familiar with. In addition, the Johnston Police Department offers the following guidelines when dealing with a solicitor at your home:

  • Ask to see the city-issued permit. The permit will display an expiration date along with a current photo of the solicitor. All solicitors are required to carry the permit and provide it upon request.
  • Avoid allowing solicitors in your home. Have them remain outside during their visit.
  •  Avoid being duped. Non-reputable solicitors may tell fictitious stories in an attempt to make a sale or secure a donation.
If you are uncomfortable with a solicitor, contact the Police Department at (515) 278-2345. If you have further questions, please contact the City Clerk's office at (515) 278-2344.
