City of Bondurant recently issued the following announcement.
Mayor Curt Sullivan, the City of Bondurant, and its planning consultant, RDG, were honored with the 2021 Planning Advocate and the Urban Design Award for the City Park Master Plan by the American Planning Association-Iowa Chapter during the recent annual conference.
These awards honor the efforts of strong collaboration to create a sense of place, whether a street, public space, neighborhood, or campus effort. The City Park Master Plan and Mayor Curt Sullivan present a visionary approach and innovative concepts to address the needs of the community. Various public interests were involved and there was a high level of collaboration between leadership and competing interests.
The City of Bondurant City Park Master Plan is the culmination of a several-month effort to engage the general public as well as specific stakeholders on the vision for the future of one of the City’s specialty parks. The Park Board served as the steering committee and engaged in a game board exercise, sifted through nearly 400 responses (representing nearly 19% of the City’s 2,128 households) to a public survey, engaged the general public through virtual open houses and booths at public events, evaluated conceptual designs, engaged specific stakeholders through interviews (the Farmers’ market coordinator, Chamber Director, downtown business people, adjacent property owners, and members of the student council for a younger viewpoint) and participation in virtual discussions and combined the amenities in greatest community demand into a final master plan that was adopted by the City Council July 19, 2021.
It is a privilege to announce the honorable Mayor Curt Sullivan is recognized as the Planning Advocate of 2021. Mayor Curt Sullivan has successfully guided Bondurant through exponential growth without the community losing its personality and small-town feel. He is thoughtful in facilitating council meetings, ensuring everyone has a chance to speak on a variety of topics. Curt is very strategic in collaborating with staff and engaging stakeholders on long-term planning efforts, including two comprehensive plans, a corridor master plan, a regional commercial master plan, and the City Park master plan, among others. Curt began his service to Bondurant on the Planning and Zoning Commission and later served on the City Council and then as Mayor. The citizens and city organization have benefitted dramatically from Mayor Sullivan’s exceptional leadership, his vision, and his commitment to planning.
The City is excited to continue pursuing collaboration and best planning practices in meeting the needs of the community.
