The Johnston Police Department is proud to appoint two officers to corporal positions on Monday, May 2, 2022. Officer Wedemeyer and Officer Trejo’s achievements were honored with a collar brass pinning ceremony during the City Council meeting.
“Each of these officers has shown tremendous leadership, and I am proud of them,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel. “Their willingness to learn and teach others coming into our organization is important. I look forward to their future contributions.”
Corporal Trejo has been an Iowa-certified police officer since 2010. He joined the Johnston Police Department in May of 2018 after serving as a Sergeant with the Denison Police Department. In May of 2021, he began as the Officer In Charge of the overnight patrol watch. Over the past year, he has worked closely with his Sergeant to begin the development of his formal leadership role within the department. His investment in others can be seen in the professional advancement and assistance he shows to the officers on his shift.
In addition to his leadership duties, Corporal Trejo is a certified Taser Instructor and a Field Training Officer.
Will Wedemeyer has been an Iowa-certified police officer since 2012. He joined the Johnston Police Department in March 2019 after serving with the Adair County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after completing his field training and probationary period in Johnston, he was invited to become a Field Training Officer and has assisted in successfully training four of our current officers.
In June of 2021, he began Johnston Police Department’s leadership development program and was later selected as the Officer In Charge of the daytime patrol watch. After serving in this role for the last 11 months, he has earned the opportunity for advancement and will now become the Corporal for the second watch patrol.
In addition to his leadership duties, Corporal Wedemeyer is a certified defensive tactics instructor, Gracie Survival Tactics Level 1 Instructor, and one of the department’s AED instructors.
