40 Trees Planted through Tree Grant Programs

16

On Monday, May 16, 2022, the Parks Department and volunteers from MidAmerican Energy Company planted 40 trees as part of the "Trees Please!" grant program and the Iowa DNR's EAB (Emerald Ash Borer) grant program.

The trees were planted along a new trail by Beaver Creek, where a number of ash trees were removed because of emerald ash borer. The City focused on diversity and planted different tree varieties with the funds provided.

Johnston is one of 55 Iowa cities and community organizations receiving "Trees Please!" grants. The program helps fund tree planting projects in common areas such as publicly owned properties, schools and community spaces. MidAmerican selected grant recipients based on each project's merits, community benefits, and the applicant's ability to obtain matching funds. The "Trees Please!" grant funds were matched by the EAB (Emerald Ash Borer) grant the Iowa DNR awarded the City.

Trees provide several benefits. They can help improve energy efficiency when part of an energy-efficient landscape design. Planting trees improves air quality, helps protect and nourish the soil and beautifies communities. Trees in winter can serve as natural windbreaks, and in the summer, they can provide shade to homes and businesses.
