25

The U.S. Census Bureau issued a report today that estimates the population of Ankeny has reached 70,287, making it the 6th largest city in Iowa. The data is based on April 2021 census estimates.

Ankeny has experienced tremendous growth over the past 20 years. Just last year, between April 1, 2020 to April 1, 2021, Ankeny added 2,395 residents, an average of about 6 people per day; a 3.5% increase. Ankeny’s population has more than doubled since 2000.

“Ankeny is a special place. We have an independent community spirit; our residents enjoy a safe community, an active lifestyle and thriving businesses. We offer quality municipal services, leading school districts and easy connectivity to a vibrant region,” says City Manager David Jones.

The City of Ankeny has been recognized nationally for its rate of growth when it was ranked by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2018 as the 4th fastest growing city in the United States with a population of 50,000 or more and it was ranked 10th on that list in 2019. Ankeny has also been ranked as the fastest growing city in the Midwest.
