On Monday July 25, 2022, weather pending, traffic signal operation for eastbound and westbound drivers on Oralabor Road at Irvinedale Drive will be changed. The new operation will remove the driver’s option to make a left turn during the green ball display, and left turns will only be allowed when the green arrow is shown. There are also new additional signal heads for each eastbound and westbound travel lane to increase visibility of the traffic signal displays.
Dynamic message boards have been placed on Oralabor Road with the schedule information, and static warning signs will be on each approach during the first month of operation. This change is to address a history of severe crashes between left-turning vehicles and on-combining thru-traffic. The countermeasure was reviewed and selected jointly by Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) Traffic & Safety Division and the City’s Public Works Department.
