Child Passenger Safety Week Is Sept. 18-24

Child passenger safety week is Sept. 18-24, and National Seat Check Saturday is Sept. 24. Car crashes are a leading cause of death for children, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). On average, two children under 13 were killed and an estimated 374 were injured every day in 2019 while riding in cars, SUVs, pickups, and vans.

On average, a child is involved in a crash while riding in a passenger vehicle every 25 seconds. When installed correctly, car seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury in a crash by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers.

If you need help installing your child's safety seat, the Johnston Police Department has technicians trained in child passenger safety. These safety technicians will inspect, teach the proper installation of car seats and answer any questions for Johnston residents.

Please call the Johnston Police Department at 515-278-2345 for more information or to schedule an appointment to install your child's car seat. Installation hours are 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. during weekdays.
