From stadium painting to Rock Around the Clock, a service day, parade, pep rally, the big game and the dance, Johnston’s 2022 homecoming promises to be one to remember.
Homecoming week will be Sept. 18-24 this year. A special web page contains details and flyers for more than a dozen events that will be held that week. Some events are only for Johnston High School students grades 10-12, while other events — such as the homecoming parade, outdoor movie and football game — are open to the public.
Each school day will feature dress-up days at Johnston High School including Monday’s PJ/loungewear, Tuesday’s future/favorite team day, Wednesday’s Anything but a backpack day, Thursday’s monochrome day and Friday’s spirit day (purple and gold). Money donated in jars around school will determine which staff member will get a pie in the face.
Wednesday is service day — a day when students will pick up trash, pull weeds, and chalk the sidewalks to help beautify the grounds for homecoming.
That’s followed by the homecoming parade down Pioneer Parkway at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22 that will feature Johnston’s marching band, cheerleaders, athletic teams and other student groups.
The night also features a free outdoor movie. Disney’s Lightyear will be showing, 7:30 p.m. Thursday at The Yard at Johnston Town Center. Both the parade and movie are open to all Johnston residents and community members.
Homecoming Day — Friday, Sept. 23 — will kick off during the school day with a pep rally. That will be followed by the announcement and presentation of Dragon Royalty at 6 p.m., and the Johnston vs. Waukee homecoming football game at 7 p.m.
The week ends with the homecoming dance, “A Night Under the Stars,” from 8-11 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24.
Homecoming shirts and decals are being sold by the Johnston Varsity Dance Team this week through Saturday, Sept. 3. Click here to purchase one!
