The Johnston-Grimes Professional Firefighters Local 4835 and Johnston Police Officers Association (JPOA) proudly awarded a local breast cancer survivor, Tara McCulley, with a check from the funds raised by selling t-shirts and pink patches. Through a proclamation, fire department members are approved to wear breast cancer shirts and police officers can wear the pink patch on their uniform while on duty through October.
“Giving back to a local survivor who has been battling this terrible disease is something the firefighters look forward to each year,” said Tyler Hardenbrook, Firefighter/Paramedic and Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraising Committee Member. “Seeing the smile on their face and what the funds can do to help offset expenses for the family is so rewarding. Thank you to both communities of Johnston and Grimes for being a part of this.”
This is one of the biggest fundraisers for Local 4835 and the eighth year. This is JPOA's second year of raising money by selling pink patches. The members enjoy seeing the community come together to support a resident in either Grimes or Johnston, battling breast cancer or a breast cancer survivor.
The recipient can use the funds however they wish. This could include medical bills, ongoing treatment, or a family vacation. We understand this last year has been difficult for many, so we appreciate the generosity in helping this family. “The smiles from the family members when we recognized her with a check was a sense of hope and kindness,” said Hardenbrook.
