A Johnston Detective received a Meritorious Service Award during the City Council meeting on Monday, Nov. 7, 2022, for keeping with the highest traditions of public service. In Fall of 2017, Officer Matt Chiles was appointed to the Investigations Unit as a Detective and performed those duties until August 2022. While in this unit, Detective Chiles was given many high-level investigative assignments, all of which were completed with the utmost professionalism.
A few of his major case accomplishments include assisting with two child death investigations, one murder investigation, two attempted murder investigations, multiple home invasions, two fatal pedestrian accidents, and multiple other felonious activities. Many investigations led to multiple offenders being convicted and sentenced to prison.
As an investigator, Detective Chiles developed an analytical mindset and strong intelligence-gathering abilities, routinely used to identify unknown suspects who committed criminal actions within the Des Moines metropolitan area. When civil unrest occurred in 2020, Detective Chiles monitored various social media platforms while working closely with the Iowa Fusion Center to identify intelligence to share with local and state partners.
During his time in the Investigations Unit, Detective Chiles was also instrumental in the training and orientation of several new detectives. He took the initiative one step further in 2022 and formalized the Investigative Unit’s Field Training Manual curriculum. This program will be utilized to train all new detectives assigned to the Investigations Unit as this agency moves forward.
“Detective Chiles’s performance is a credit to this department and this profession,” said Police Chief Dennis McDaniel. “During his time in the Investigative Unit, he kept with the highest traditions of public service. Chiles contributed significantly to the mission of this command and the continued well-being of the City of Johnston and the Johnston Police Department.”
