Johnston students selected for Drake University Honor Band

Fifteen Johnston students have been selected to perform at the Drake University Honor Band Festival, scheduled for Dec. 2 and 3. The festival provides outstanding high school musicians with the opportunity to work with our nation’s finest conductors in select band settings.

Those selected for the Honors Concert Band are: Ava Thornton – Bass Clarinet, Marissa Pewe – Clarinet, Sarah Wetterberg – Clarinet, Tory Bishop – Euphonium, Audrey Bristow – Flute, Mikayla Jensen – Flute, Madeline Meiners – Flute, and Hayley TeKippe – Oboe.

Those selected for the Honors Wind Ensemble are: Margi Skinner – Alto Sax, Eric Qi – Clarinet, Peyton Brown – Clarinet, Anita Dinakar – Flute, Paige Thacker – French Horn, Alan Kang – French Horn, and Ben Hansen – French Horn.

During the two-day festival, students and directors develop their skills through rehearsals and clinics with guest conductors and members of the Drake music faculty. All activities of the High School Honor Band will be conducted in the Harmon Fine Arts Center, located on the Drake University campus.

The culminating events are the two evening concerts featuring the Drake Bands and the Honor Bands, 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 at Drake’s Performing Arts Hall at the Fine Arts Center.

The Honors Concert Band and Honors Wind Ensemble are comprised of more than 200 students from throughout Iowa and Nebraska. These students are among the finest in the nation.
