JOHNSTON, IA. (April 8, 2022) —Erica Whittle has been selected as the Johnston Community School District’s new Learning Coordinator of Secondary Schools and PK-12 Math Supports. She will fill the vacancy created by Mary Cooksley’s retirement at the end of this school year.

Whittle will officially start her new role July 1, 2022. She has worked in the West Des Moines school district since July 2015, currently as principal of Stilwell Junior High and previously as associate principal of Valley High School. Prior to that, she worked as an instructional coach in Dallas Center-Grimes, and as an 8th and 9th grade math and science teacher.

“I believe that I can offer the Johnston school district and community the abilities, talents, passion, and enthusiasm that are necessary for a successful district level instructional leader,” Whittle said. “Supporting student achievement through best practices of curriculum, assessment, and instruction is a true passion area for me. I have found joy in coaching adult colleagues both as an instructional coach and as a building-level administrator.”

In her new role, Whittle will be part of the Johnston Community School District’s administrative team. Working under the direction of the Associate Superintendent, she will be responsible for oversight and leadership in secondary curriculum and PK-12 math supports. She will assist school buildings with goals and action planning, curriculum review, and development of instructional practices.

“Erica’s work as a secondary school administrator for the past seven years, and particularly leading the creation and implementation of MTSS (multi-tiered system of supports) to meet students’ needs, makes her a great fit for this position,” said JCSD Superintendent Laura Kacer. “In addition, her experience mentoring new principals and aspiring administrators, implementing PLCs (professional learning communities) and encouraging a growth mindset all contribute to her being a great addition to our team.”

Whittle received her bachelor’s degree in middle school education from Northwest Missouri State University, and her masters of education from Graceland University. She received her specialist in education licensure and superintendent endorsement from Drake University. She is currently seeking her doctorate in educational leadership at Drake University. Her dissertation is focused on the emotional intelligence of teachers and the impact of COVID-19.

Whittle’s selection will go before the Johnston Board of Education as early as April 11.
