The Polk County Sheriff’s Office said it is dealing with drivers who think the COVID-19 pandemic gives them a license to exceed the speed limits, according to KCCI Channel 8.
On April 21, Polk County law enforcement officials held a news conference to announce that law enforcement will be stepping up and doing extra patrols.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the number of speeding citations over 100 mph is up by 46%.
Kevin Schneider, Polk County sheriff, said they don't like to write citations but they will if the situation warrants it.
“We don't want to write you a citation, but we're not afraid to write you a citation,” Schneider told KCCI.
Nathan Fulk, an Iowa State Patrol colonel, said the state wants to balance public safety with personal exposure.
“We want to ultimately balance public safety and personal exposure while partnering with our public safety partners to raise awareness on this concerning trend,” Fulk told KCCI.
