City of Johnston issued the following announcement on Dec. 3.
KEEP THE WREATH RED THIS HOLIDAY SEASON
The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department is continuing a great holiday tradition for the fifth year in a row. The public safety campaign, is known as "Keep the Wreath Red," promotes fire safety as thousands of Johnston and Grimes residents decorate for the holidays.
"During the holiday season, it is important to remember safety with our lights and space heaters," said Deputy Fire Marshal Joel Decker. "While those holiday lights look terrific on the trees, it is important to keep your real tree watered and space heaters away from objects. Our goal is to continue to keep the wreath red, but we need your help to practice safety."
Firefighters placed one wreath outside each of the three fire stations and decorated the wreath with a string of red lights. The three stations include Station 39, located at 6373 Merle Hay Rd., Station 38 10225 NW 62nd Ave., and Station 37 200 S. James St., in Grimes. If a fire occurs in the city attributed to holiday decorations, firefighters will replace one of the red light bulbs with a white bulb.
The mission of our community is to Keep the Wreath Red. Since the department began the campaign, they have yet to change a bulb on the wreath, but they would like to keep it that way.
