City of Johnston issued the following announcement on Dec. 30.
A reminder, sidewalks must be cleared within 48-hours after a snow or ice event has ended. This will help ensure pedestrians can safely use sidewalks. Those who do not remove snow and ice may be fined. To learn more, view city code 136.03.
Sidewalk policy
Property owners are responsible for the ice and snow removal from all sidewalks that abut their private property.
Clearing curb ramps and crosswalks
We encourage the residents within Johnston to be a good neighbor and keep curb ramps clear. Snow and ice-free curb ramps are needed to keep sidewalks accessible to everyone, especially those with limited mobility.
Snow and ice shoveled or that accumulates in crosswalks will make it difficult and dangerous for visitors and residents with limited mobility. When you get to the end of your sidewalk, please clear the crosswalks and curb ramps if you are able.
Keep fire hydrants clear of snow and ice
If there is a fire hydrant near your home, please clear a three-foot circumference area around the hydrant. The Johnston-Grimes Metropolitan Fire Department also suggests shoveling a path from the sidewalk to the street or driveway, so the hydrant is visible to firefighters from the road.
In an emergency, crews can find and access the hydrant with the greatest possible speed. Those extra few seconds can make a major difference in an emergency. If you do not have a hydrant near your home, please consider adopting one in your neighborhood.
