Grand View University issued the following announcement on September 2.
Global Vision Week will be held the week of October 11. Global Vision Week was created to offer students, faculty and staff and the community opportunities to encounter belief systems, heritages and perspectives that differ from our own. The goal is to develop a deeper understanding of others, ourselves and our relationship to the world. This year’s theme will be "Identity and Belonging in a Digital World." The week’s activities will engage our minds to better understand the ways technology shapes the places people live, learn, work, and communicate with each other. When we chose this theme last year, we didn’t realize how timely it would be.
We are proud to be hosting Crystal Washington, who will serve as the keynote speaker and Ravenholt Visiting Scholar during Global Vision Week. Ms. Washington’s keynote address will take place Tuesday, October 12. It will occur at 10:40 a.m. At this point, we are not sure where the address will take place; however, we anticipate that it will be presented in a physical location and streamed virtually. We will announce this very soon. In her address, The Future of Identity in a Changing Digital Landscape, technology strategist and futurist, Crystal, will be showing us how the roles and power of personal and cultural identity are continually shifting in our increasingly connected world. In this high-energy talk, Washington will demonstrate how you can leverage identity and technology for the betterment of yourself and humanity. Crystal will uncover the surprising ways technology is changing humans; she will identify the role social media is playing in shifting global societies, cultures, and our behaviors, and discover what you can do now to leverage global connectivity for opportunities.
Throughout the week we will explore the Future of Identity in a Changing Digital Landscape. Sub-themes being discussed may include the following.
- Student panels regarding online education with a special focus on the COVID-19 environment
- How a person's cultural identity plays a role in digital identity
- The role of social media in building one’s digital identity
- Career building and networking in an online environment
- Protecting your mental wellness in a digital environment
- Digital media and bias
