City of Johnston issued the following announcement on September 22.
The Johnston Police Department looked for kids practicing good bicycle safety habits this summer. If an officer saw kids practicing good habits, they got “Busted in a Good Way.” This is no ordinary ticket; this one gets you a voucher for a free ice cream cone at Van Dee’s Ice Cream Shoppe in Johnston. Once a ticket was claimed, it went into a drawing for a new bicycle. This year, a young man received a ticket for safely crossing the roadway and won a new set of wheels – a bicycle. The bicycle was presented by Community Affairs Coordinator, Josh Kennedy and Sergeant Grandon.
“This is the fifth consecutive year we have partnered with Van Dee’s Ice Cream Shoppe on this program,” said Sergeant Zach Grandon. “This program allows uniformed officers to interact with the kids positively to ensure they understand the importance of safely crossing a roadway. It also allows the officers to interact with the kids in a positive way, which builds upon the community policing aspect.”
This year, 108 tickets were redeemed at Van Dee’s Ice Cream Shoppe. We look forward to partnering with them again next year on the program.
