City of Johnston issued the following announcement on September 23.
The City of Johnston is a recipient of the Derecho Community Forestry Grant in the amount of $4,999.78. The grant will match funds available for a project in the Beaver Creek Natural Resource Area. On August 10, 2020, a Derecho came through our community, which ruined the tree canopy in many of our public areas and across the City. While the City cannot replace all of the trees taken during the derecho, this grant provides a good starting point.
The Johnston Parks Department and our City’s tree arborists ensure the community has diversity in our tree species. This grant allows the City to purchase 63 trees, which will be planted near the Beaver Creek water trail where the trail is being repaired. Seven different species will be planted, which include:
- Nine Espresso Kentucky Coffee Tree
- Nine Swamp White Oak
- Nine Northern Catalpa
- Eight Exclamation London Planetree
- Nine Common Hackberry
- Ten Bald Cypress
- Nine Heritage River Birch
