Nearly 7,000 local community members have signed a petition opposing the Des Moines School Board's decision to approve a $15 million, 4,000-seat football and soccer stadium to be built at Drake University and used as a shared venue for school teams.
According to a recent WHO 13 Des Moines online article, Des Moines resident Dan Pardock spearheaded efforts to oppose the new stadium and started a Facebook Group called "Save Our Stadium" to initiate the petition. According to the group's Facebook page, 6,934 signatures had been obtained as of June 2.
Pardock said the petition offers two proposals to the Des Moines School Board regarding the stadium project.
"One is that they can choose to forget the whole deal and completely stop the proposal altogether," Pardock told WHO 13 Des Moines. "The other idea is that they then hold a general vote and put it up to the public to decide if that $15 million in SAVE funds could be used for this project."
The Des Moines School Board said in a statement that it feels they made "the best decision at this time based on the information we have," according to the WHO 13 Des Moines article.
